I found this website about the National Youth Leadership Council which deals with Disaster Relief Resources for Recovery. Has information regarding how they reach out to young people to get involved through service learning and encouraging relief effort. An idea is to get students in your class to join the National club or even start their own in response to a disaster. It could be a great way to get students interested in whats going on around the world and in their community.

I found a service learning project that allows middle school students to put together "Good Citizenship" assemblies for elementary schools in their district. These assemblies would teach young children about what it means to be a good citizen. They would teach them about not littering, being polite to neighbors and people you meet in the community. The middle school students would also focus on being nice to animals and volunteering to lend a hand if you see someone in need of assistance.
ReplyDeleteThis service learning project would not only benefit the younger children in the community but it would also place a responsibility on the middle school students to practice what they preach.
I found this at: http://www.paservicelearning.org/Project_Ideas/SocialStudies.html
Is there a branch of this volunteer program in Lubbock or any surrounding areas? It would be a great program to get kids involved in if there were any severe storms in surrounding areas of texas or oklahoma, like tornadoes. But, this is also a great idea for world-wide events like the earthquake in Haiti.
ReplyDeleteGood Job!
Sounds like a great idea. You could tie it directly to curriculum objectives about citizenship.
ReplyDeleteI like your service learning, Mary. I cannot think of an area in the United States that is safe from any disaster, so it is good for students to see how they can help others who have been hit by these natural disasters.
